Authored by a former Los Angeles Unified School District history teacher, this textbook explores Mexican American history and heritage from a prehistoric native people traveling across continents to become the "Indians" of Mexico, to the civilizations of the Toltecs, Aztecs and Mayans; the coming of the Spaniards to Mexico and the birth of the Mestizo people and culture; Mexico's fight for independence from Spain; the 19th century wars between Mexico and the United States; Mexico's Revolution of 1910 with its mythic figures such as Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa; the northward migration of Mexicans into the Southwestern United States; the Mexican teenagers of the 1940's (zoot suiters); the Chicanos of Cesar Chavez's farmworker movement, and the struggle of Mexican Americans as they fight for a better life and proper representation in a modern and evolving democracy.
