Your students have heard about the feminist movement—but do they know this part of the story? This is an American story—and a Jewish one.

Bella Abzug, Betty Friedan, and Gloria Steinem helped reshape American society through activism, writing, protest, and public leadership.

Friedan’s “The Feminine Mystique” (1963) became one of the most influential texts of its time, sparking a national conversation about women’s roles. Abzug, known as “Battling Bella,” brought a bold and outspoken voice to Congress—with the 1970 campaign slogan, “This woman's place is in the House—the House of Representatives.” Steinem helped pioneer feminist ideas in mainstream culture and co-founded “Ms. Magazine,” a landmark publication of the era.

Together, they broke barriers—challenging patriarchy, misogyny, and sexism—and expanded access to education, career options, civic leadership, and political life.

The legacies of these Jewish American women teach students that courage, collective action, and more than a little bit of chutzpah can push society to open doors for the generations to come.
