| The protagonist, Aminata Diallo, is a fictional character. Her harrowing life story — from being kidnapped in West Africa at age 11 to surviving enslavement in South Carolina, helping the British record names in the historic "Book of Negroes," and traveling to Nova Scotia and Sierra Leone — was written to bring real, historical experiences to life.
While Aminata was not a real historical figure, the overarching history and the title of the document that the show is named for are real. A British military ledger, the "Book of Negroes" recorded the names, ages, physical descriptions, and claims to freedom of about 3,000 Black Loyalists who were granted passage by the British to various destinations, mainly Nova Scotia, England, and later Sierra Leone. The miniseries is based on a book of historical fiction written by Canadian novelist, Lawrence Hill.
