About the resource
These testimonial interviews with interracial couples in the U.S. 50 years post-Loving v. Virginia reflect on past political progress and cultural transformations still to come. Loving v. Virginia (1967) was a Supreme Court case and ruling that is widely considered the beginning of the full dismantling of Jim Crow race laws in the United States. The ruling banned anti-miscegenation laws (intermarriage between white people and non-white groups) in the United States.
About the Plaintiffs: Mildred was a Black and Indigenous/Native American woman. She and Richard - a white man - were childhood friends and sweethearts. They married in DC, where interracial marriage was legal. Shortly after returning to Caroline County, Virginia, to live as husband and wife, the county Sheriff arrested them in their home.
Loving v. Virginia set a legal precedent that was later used, in 2015, when the Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage in the case Obergefell v. Hodges. This video is bound to foster engaged and generative conversation that many students are likely to find personally resonant.
